Goteborgs rape lingon3/28/2023 ![]() ![]() All of this because of the stupid French. It has become such an issue that Swedish Match has been subtly been changing the can graphics to GR'. My American friends have received dirty looks from bar maids when leaving their Goteborg’s Rapé snus can on the bar. Woman's groups have gasped in shock when seeing the cans. Over the last several years, we have been treated to forum posts about "Goat Rape" snus and other crudities. Back then, they never considered the American market. Goteborg’s Rapé isn't made that way anymore but pre-Swedish Match AB decided to keep the name for the sake of tradition. The word ‘Rapé’ comes from France and means grate or grated, which refers to the 1700s practice that originated in French society circles where people grated their tobaccos by hand to get the exact consistency they wanted. Why should they be? As usual, this is the fault of the evil French. Goteborg’s Rapé has suffered indignities in the USA because Americans are not familiar with that stupid comma-like thing above the letter "e". Rapé is pronounced RaPEE or RaPAY NOT Rape! The white portion was born! Meanwhile, Unz was fired for touching the snus-making machinery and reeking of alcohol during business hours. Everyone marveled at the white color of the portion pouch and how it was dry to the touch but moist inside. A low level factory worker by the name of Axel Unz accidently turned off the water supply to the rewetting spigot while getting a glass of water. This requires an initial wetting of the portions followed by a rewetting before the portions go into the can. In fact, if it wasn't for Axel Unz, the white portion might have never been invented at all! According to people who heard this story, Goteborg’s Rapé was supposed to be produced as an original or "wet" portion snus. The characteristic GR flavor stays the same, but the pouches are softer, stronger and feel fuller under the lip. For sure, everyone gets carried away when trying this Snus.Goteborg’s Rapé was the world's first white portion snus, an innovation that was quickly adopted by several other brands. The latest manufacturing techniques were used for this product innovation. Recently, a new creation of Göteborgs Rapé has been launched in collaboration with Swedish Match and Alexander Gustafsson, a passionate Snus user and professional mixed martial artist: Göteborgs Rapé One White. Still today, the Swedish classic is known for a flowery, smooth Snus with clear notes of lavender and juniper berry and a slight touch of wood and citrus. In the 1990s, Göteborgs Rapé was the first White Portion Snus in the history of Snus. Mainland Swedes took this as a show of quality and freshness, as Göteborg was known for trade and often the first place exotic goods arrived. Decades ago, the blue can symbolized that a Snus came from Göteborg. The characteristic blue and gold can has become a symbol of quality to many Swedes. Today, Göteborgs Rapé Snus is made from ground tobacco. The word is French for „grated“, which is how the tobacco leaves were first reduced to an appropriate portion size. Rapé describes the original production method. The name stems from the close connection to Sweden’s coastal city Göteborg and the heritage of the sailors. After the war was over, Göteborgs Rapé became a registered brand in 1919. Among them: Göteborgs Rapé – smooth tobacco flavor with notes of lavender and juniper berries. To maximize revenue and funds, the government produced only the most popular Snus blends. Then, in 1915, the Swedish government took control of all Snus production to fund the country’s defence and pension reform. The fresh, smooth taste brought the exotic feeling of being at sea to anyone who wanted it. Everyday citizens tried the blend they would later come to know as Göteborgs Rapé. Not long after the blend became popular with sailors, the trend spread to mainland Sweden. But soon, one blend would become hugely popular: Adding juniper berries and lavender to Snus became a hit among sailors. They tinkered and experimented to find a way to create their own custom type of Snus. With travels that dragged on for weeks and access to various herbs and spices, sailors became creative with their Snus. There was even a saying: „A seaman’s mood is only as good as his snus.“ Around this time in the 19th century, Snus was popular with sailors. The arriving boats would carry spices, fruits and other goods from the other side of the planet. When the Swedish town Gothenburg (in English Göteborg) was one of Europe’s major ports, trade flourished. ![]()
